Ujamaa Hip Hop Darasa

 

Some have lost hope and directions due to limited social and economic access including education, employment and health services. Thus ‘Darasa’ intended to meet the purpose of empowering the young generation to claim their better and hopeful future through hip hop music.


 

 

Collaborating with hip hop music icon, Fid Q, TAMASHA ran a project in music especially hip hop which seek to inspire young people to realize their life dreams, look into environment they are living, identify challenges and use music as a tool to achieve their dreams and provide a learning forum from their life experiences. The project started with a group of street children from Ubungo junction known to wash windscreens and get paid little money or none. TAMASHA provided them a space to utilize their music talents and learn how to become good citizens in their communities. Some have lost hope and directions due to limited social and economic access including education, employment and health services. Thus ‘Darasa’ intended to meet the purpose of empowering the young generation to claim their better and hopeful future through hip hop music.

Although the integral part of the classes’ empowerment was through music in particular hip hop but Ujamaa Hip Hop Darasa also work to train the youth in ‘self-management skills’ such as self-awareness, communication skills, interpersonal relationship skills and the emphasize was in cognitive skills on how to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Ujamaa Hip Hop Darasa, provided the following activities for children living in the streets and those from the slums.

  • Literacy programme - Reading session, English classes
  • Life skills education
  • Music lessons – including recording of audio and videos, dancing (breakdance), and deejaying
  • Graffiti art
